The USPS Inspector General recently joined others in sounding the alarm that the Postal Service will lose its lone sitting Governor in December. There are normally nine Governors, appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate, by the count has shrunk down to one and could soon be none. Most blame a ‘hold’ placed on the group of Obama nominees by a single Senator who doesn’t like some of the candidates.
The practical result is that a process of running the Postal Service with regular monthly involvement of nine prominent citizens with the Postmaster General and Deputy Postmaster General has morphed into a ‘temporary emergency committee’ made up of three people: PMG Megan Brennan, DPMG Ronald Stroman, and Governor James Bilbray.
PMG Brennan assured the attendees at the recent Mailers Technical Advisory Committee meeting that USPS will continue to deliver mail and function as usual even if it is down to no Governors on December 8. PRC Commissioners Robert Taub and Mark Acton had their Senate reconfirmation hearing on November 15, and we hope that they and several USPS Governors are confirmed during the lame duck session.
