Rates increase January 21

The Postal Service is set to raise most rates an average of 1.9 percent on Sunday, January 21. As the following tables indicate, Nonprofit Marketing Mail varies a lot around the average, with origin mail doing much better than drop-shipped. This is mainly because USPS is reducing work-share discounts that are calculated to exceed its avoided internal costs from the drop-shipping.
The trend of reducing work-sharing incentives for Nonprofit Marketing Mail letters, often used for fundraising, will continue under the proposed regulatory changes announce by the Postal Regulatory Commission on December 1.
The Postal Service said when it filed these rates that this would be the last rate case under the CPI price cap established in 2006. The PRC proposal to change the system to CPI plus several possible surcharges adding up to as much as 5 additional points certainly supports the USPS point of view. Nevertheless, three of the four PRC Commissioners expressed the hope that the public comment process would improve its proposal.
